Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is a colorless organic thermoplastic polymer. PEEK is a semicrystalline thermoplastic with excellent mechanical and chemical resistance properties that are retained to high temperatures. Some grades have a useful operating temperature of up to 250 °C (482 °F) . It is highly resistant to thermal degradation as well as attack by both organic and aqueous environments. Because of its toughness, PEEK is used to manufacture parts used in demanding applications. PEEK can be machined to make piston parts, pumps, HPLC columns, compressor plate valves, and cable insulation. It is one of the few plastics compatible with ultra-high vacuum applications. It is extensively used in the aerospace, automotive, and chemical process industries. Industrial and medical grades of PEEK require different machining strategies. PEEK is a rigid plastic, which is considered for making engineering parts that need to withstand abusive work environments. PEEK parts are naturally an opaque grey or beige. Given PEEK’s polymeric structure, paints and coatings are difficult to bond to its surface. However, thanks to its inherent chemical resistance, it is often acceptable to leave parts as machined.
As Machined: PEEK is easily machined and can achieve smooth surface finishes comparable to 125 uin Ra finish.
Bead Blast: Any undesirable tool marks may be removed via mechanically abrading the surface with glass beads.
