Types of Stainless Steel Used in CNC Machining

There are various grades of stainless steel used in machining, with the most prevalent being 304 and 316. 304 stainless steel contains mostly iron with 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It delivers corrosion resistance, along with strength and formability. 304 is ideal for fittings, fasteners, piping, and gears. 303 stainless steel is more machinable than 304, but it’s relative weakness often makes 304 the preferred choice.

316 stainless steel has similar performance but offers improved corrosion resistance. Its composition includes molybdenum, an increased amount of nickel, and 16% chromium. This composition grants it the ability to withstand contact with acids and chlorides, making it an ideal choice for food service equipment, medical equipment, and industrial environments where acids or alkalis are present.

To further strengthen stainless steel, some grades are subject to heat treatments, which result in precipitation hardening of the material. One of the most used types of PH stainless steel is 17-4 PH stainless steel. The composition of this alloy contains between 15 – 17.5% of chromium. Its high mechanical strength and excellent resistance to corrosion make it ideal for industries such as petrochemical, marine, and aerospace.

Stainless Steel 300, 400 & Additional Grades

Each grade of stainless steel offers a unique array of benefits. While some stainless steel grades are easy to machine, such as 300 and 400 series stainless steel, other grades can pose problems when machining. Difficult to machine stainless steel grades include 13-8, 15-5, and 17-4. Through years of stainless steel machining experience, Anpllocnc has developed efficient methods for machining most stainless steel grades, even in the hardened/heat-treated conditions.

Stainless steels 304 and 316 are processed for improved machinability and can be machined faster and more cost-effectively than other forms of steel. Stainless steel 303 is non-magnetic and resistant to oxidation. Stainless steel 17-4 is a precipitation-hardened martensitic stainless steel.

Thin walls require extra care when CNC machining stainless steel. The absolute minimum thickness is 0.5mm for metals. To minimize costs and machining time, it’s recommended to increase the thickness of thin walls to at least 0.8mm. Unless weight is a determining factor thicker walls are more stable and less costly. Thin features are susceptible to vibration, creating extra complexity and requiring considerably more time in machining operations.
