POM (Delrin/Acetal) CNC Machining

POM, the abbreviation of polyoxymethylene (Delrin/ Acetal), is an engineering thermoplastic that can be used in many mechanical applications.

What Is POM (Delrin/Acetal)

Delrin, also known as POM (Polyoxymethylene), is a high-performance engineering thermoplastic that is widely used in CNC machining, injection molding, and 3D printing to create durable, precise components. Delrin’s unique combination of high stiffness, low friction, and excellent dimensional stability makes it an ideal material for high-precision mechanical parts, such as gears, bearings, bushings, and medical devices. In addition, Delrin’s excellent resistance to wear, fatigue, and creep makes it suitable for high-load applications, such as automotive and aerospace components, as well as parts used in the food processing and packaging industries

Types of POM materials

Polyoxymethylene (POM) is available in several popular grades, each with different properties suitable for specific applications. The following are commonly used POM types:

The most common POM grade used for manufacturing is acetal copolymer (POM-C), also known as polyoxymethylene copolymer. POM-C has a good balance of mechanical properties, including high stiffness, low friction, and excellent dimensional stability. It is also resistant to moisture and chemicals, making it suitable for use in a wide range of applications, including automotive, medical, and consumer products.

POM homopolymer (POM-H) is another grade of POM that has higher stiffness and hardness than POM-C, but it is also more brittle and has lower impact strength. POM-H is often used in applications that require high stiffness and strength, such as gears and bearings.

UV stabilized POM is typically used in outdoor or UV-exposed applications where prolonged exposure to sunlight or UV radiation can cause the material to degrade or discolor over time.

This is a specialized grade of POM that is approved for use in contact with food and beverages. It is formulated to meet stringent food safety regulations and does not contain any harmful substances that can leach into food.

(1) POM is a crystalline plastic, density of 1.42g/cm3, its steel is very good, commonly known as “race steel”.

(2) POM has fatigue resistance, creep resistance, wear resistance, heat resistance, impact resistance and other excellent performance, and the coefficient of friction is small, self-lubricating good.

(3) POM is not easy to absorb moisture, water absorption rate of 0.22 ~ 0.25%, good dimensional stability in a humid environment, its shrinkage rate of 2.1% (larger), injection molding size is difficult to control, the heat deflection temperature of 172 ℃, paraformaldehyde has two kinds of homopolymer formaldehyde, different performance (homopolymer formaldehyde temperature resistance is better).
