CNC Machining in Polypropylene?

Polypropylene (PP) is an economical material that offers a combination of outstanding physical, chemical, mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties not found in any other thermoplastic. At Anpllocnc, we’re your number one source for polypropylene machining, creating a wide variety of parts for your needs within any system. To handle your requests, we operate highly capable CNC machines, perfect for handling very precise polypropylene milling. Compared to low or high density polyethylene, polypropylene has a lower impact strength, superior working temperature, and greater tensile strength. Polypropylene has excellent chemical resistance in corrosive environments where there are organic solvents, degreasing agents, or electrolytic attack, but poor resistance to aromatic, aliphatic and chlorinated solvents. It is lightweight, non-staining, and exhibits a low moisture absorption rate. It’s ideal for the transfer of hot liquids and gases, and in vacuum system atmospheres with high heat and pressure. Polypropylene Material Properties Chart When handling polypropylene machining, you’ll find two different types are available for use: Homopolymer or Copolymer. Although similar, each exhibits distinct differences in both appearance and performance.

What is Polypropylene plastic?

Polypropylene, or PP for short refers to a family of semi-rigid thermoplastics that are white and odorless. Polypropylene (PP) is a BPA-free, lightweight plastic with exceptional fatigue resistance and toughness. They also possess excellent physical properties such as high strength at low temperature, good resistance against chemical exposure withstanding heat up to 200℃ (392 °F). Polymers made from these materials have been rapidly adopted by sectors including automotive manufacturing, packing, machinery, automobiles, electronic appliances, construction, textiles, agriculture, due their combination set of desirable performance characteristics .

Mechanical properties

The chemical formula is (C3H6)n,

density is 0.89~0.91g/cm3,

flammable, melting point 189℃,

softening at 155℃,

use temperature range is -30~140℃.

It can resist the corrosion of acid, alkali, salt liquid, and many kinds of organic solvents below 80℃, and can decompose under the effect of high temperature and oxidation.

Polypropylene is widely used in the production of garments, blankets, and other fiber products, medical equipment, automobiles, bicycles, parts, conveying pipes, chemical containers, etc. It is also used in food and drug packaging.

What are the benefits of CNC Machining Polypropylene (PP)?

PP’s main advantage is its outstanding processing performance. It can be injection molding or CNC machined, such as PP capsules.PP is always CNC machined from sheet material. CNC machining could make prototypes and small batch PP parts with high precision tolerances.Polypropylene (PP) more suitable for CNC machining, turning, milling or drilling. CNC machining method could makes Polypropylene (PP) with very tight tolerances.Blow are some characteristics for Polypropylene (PP) in CNC machining:

Chemical resistance: PP will not react in any acids,so it could make liquids. Elasticity and toughness:

PP is generally considered to be a tough material because it can withstand deformation within certain limits and does not break apart when stressed.

Fatigue resistance: PP retains its shape after a lot of twisting and bending test. This feature is particularly valuable for making living hinges.

Insulation: PP material is a high resistance and insulating material.

Polypropylene Material Finish

Polypropylene components have an inherent off-white hue and are not conducive to surface treatments like painting. Additionally, due to its hydrophobic properties, PP is extremely resistant to dyeing.

1. As Machined: Leaving the part in an as-machined state is the most common surface finishing option for those employing CNC machining in polypropylene.

2. Bead Blast: Polypropylene can leave burrs on part edges during CNC machining, and the material is prone to melting when in contact with the cutting tool. This often results in a surface finish that is not up to par, requiring additional sanding with coarse sandpaper or media.

3.Polypropylene is a semi-clear white color by default, but can also come in opaque white on request.

Note For Designers

Polyethylene is available as a Homopolymer (PPH) and Copolymer (PPC). Material selection may depend on application and desired properties although the attributes are very similar and they are largely interchangable materials. Here is a brief overview of each.

Homopolymer Polypropylene

PPH is the more widely used general-purpose grade of Polypropylene. It has improved chemical resistance and stiffness and also has a higher working temperature than the PPC variation (0-100°C). It is slightly more expensive than PPC although still relatively inexpensive.

Copolymer Polypropylene

Although PPC has a relatively lower chemical resistance than PPH, it is still considered to be very good. Its operating temperature range is not as high (up to 80°C) but it has improved impact strength at lower temperatures (down to -20°C).

It also has lower susceptibility to stress cracking. Whilst both are suitable for use with food, the copolymer is more commonly selected for food-related applications. PPC is more transparent than PPH and generally used where more flexibility is required.

PPC can be further divided into random and block copolymers, produced by the polymerizing of propene and ethane.

Random Copolymers

Random copolymers features up to 6% Ethene which is randomly dispersed. They are flexible and optically clear.

Block Copolymers

Block copolymers feature between 5 and 15% ethane and the co-monomer units are arranged in a regular pattern, making it tougher and less brittle.
