Sinker EDM Services

Sinker EDM services for contract manufacturing

Anpllocnc has been providing sedimentation discharge machining services since its inception. We produce copper or brass electrodes in-house, giving us full control of the manufacturing process. We have manual and CNC sinker EDM machines that can be equipped with automatic tool changers for complete automation of the process. Automation helps ensure consistency in every component, making the process more efficient and faster than manual intervention. The advantage of sinker EDM equipment is that it does not stress the material during use. If you need a component that delivers strong, durable performance, sinker EDM may be the perfect solution. These capabilities allow us to cut complex contours into any conductive material, including rare and precious metals.
We specialize in the cutting of difficult-to-machine materials such as tool steels, conductive ceramics and superalloys. Because sinker EDM uses electrical discharges to cut profiles into workpieces, the hardened alloy does not suffer the same thermal distortion as traditional machining methods. We can cut workpieces up to 24″ x 31″ x 47″ with a minimum part feature of 0.008″, an accuracy of ±.00002″, and a repeatability of ±.00005″. Our sinker EDM machines produce a surface finish of 8RA. We offer very fast turnaround times, typically 1-2 weeks for sinker EDM parts.

Application of Sinker Electric Discharge Machining

Sinker EDM is used to create complex cavities and is therefore particularly useful in the manufacture of molds, dies and other forms of tooling, especially from hard materials such as tool steels. It is also better than other machining processes for creating sharp interior corners. Common sinker EDM applications include:

  • Blind Cavities
  • Thin Walls
  • Fine Finishes
  • Sharp Corners
  • Machining Threads & More
  • Blind Keyways
  • Internal Splines, Squares or Hexes

Key Features of Sinker EDM

Precision Machining

One of the primary features of sinker EDM services is their incredible precision. The process uses electrical discharges to remove material from a workpiece, resulting in meticulously crafted parts with tight tolerances. For example, sinker EDM is used in the medical industry to create intricate, high-precision components such as surgical instruments.

Complex Geometries

Sinker EDM machining can produce complex shapes that are often impossible to achieve with traditional machining processes. Whether the design involves intricate details or difficult angles, sinker EDM handles it with ease. For example, in the aerospace industry, intricate turbine blades are machined using sinker EDM due to its ability to consistently reproduce complex shapes with exceptional accuracy.

Non-Contact Process

The non-contact nature of sinker EDM services makes it uniquely suited to machining delicate or thin-walled components. As per Thomas Net, wire EDM techniques facilitate the creation of small-scale, highly complex medical parts, frequently used to create micro medical parts, surgical tools, or essential components of larger equipment. It eliminates the risk of inducing stresses or deformations into the material being worked on.

Hard Material Capability

Sinker EDM is not phased by material hardness. It can shape hard metals such as titanium, opening a broad spectrum of possibilities in manufacturing and industry applications.

Consistent Repeatability

One of Anpllocnc’s key offerings is the consistent repeatability inherent in the sinker EDM process. Once the parameters are set, the same high level of accuracy can be achieved across multiple parts.

What is sinker electrical discharge machining?

Sinker EDM is an effective solution for machining conductive materials to manufacture custom parts with high complexity and complex structure. It is a subtractive manufacturing process. When sedimentation EDM works, it requires electrodes that are shaped to match the features of the desired part. These electrodes are usually made of graphite or copper. The electrodes and raw materials are then submerged in a dielectric fluid, and when the electrodes get close to the raw materials, sparks are generated, resulting in localized high temperatures that melt the materials. The electrode will move up and down along the z-axis to facilitate the washing of metal particles.

What is special about EDM is that it does not require physical contact between the tool and the workpiece to make the cut. During sinking EDM, the electrode tool is slowly lowered (sinked) onto the workpiece, eroding the workpiece material and creating a cavity that matches the shape of the tool, thereby maintaining a consistent spark gap as it descends. Hundreds of thousands of sparks are generated every second. The most common dielectric fluid for EDM is hydrocarbon oil, but other fluids can also be used.

What’s The Difference Between Sinker EDM & Wire EDM?

Wire EDM also uses an electrode carrying an electric current that burns away the material without ever touching the workpiece. However, a wire electrode needs to be tightly held on both ends and so it can cut through the material like a cheese slicer. With Sinker EDM, the electrode is a solid shape that “sinks” into the material, so it does not need to cut all the way through. This makes Sinker EDM the ideal solution for a wide range of applications, such as blind cavities or keyways, thin walls, or cross-sections. Injection molding and stamping die components can benefit from Sinker EDM’s versatility as can certain complex production components.
